Round 1 RCR FatCreations

The first round of the 2024 British Women’s Team Cup got underway at 13:30 on Saturday 30th March 2024 on the iconic Goodwood Racecourse. Hosted by RCR Fat creations who had donated prizes to the first 6 finishers. Unusual, and gave the racers more an of incentive.

The course was an undulating 16km consisting of 5 laps, a total of 80km. Weather conditions where favourable. 12 degrees, sunny, no rain, but a 10km p/h Northerly breeze.

With a briefing from British Cycling the race got underway.

Unfortunately, on lap 1 there was a touch of wheels, and 3 riders came down. No serious injuries and the race convoy Ambulance Crew were quick to attend.

This split the peloton and a lead group of 10 riders came through on the first lap followed by a second large group working to bridge the gap. The nature of the course (and wind conditions) meant that the peloton quickly became strung out.

Lap 2 saw the same group of strong riders, working together (as the BWTC focus on team work) maintain a 2 minute lead.

Lap 3 and 4 saw a number of dropped/slower/upcoming riders pulled from the race at the start finish line. Under BWTC rules, all of these rider’s ‘place’ and gain points for their team.

The ‘Bell Lap’ (lap 4) still had the same front group of 10 riders. We anticipated a reduced bunch sprint on lap 5 and, ‘lo and behold’ that’s what happened.

The finish 400 meters was a slight up-hill drag and the strongest riders came to the fore.
