Round 6 Duncan Murray Wines Race

British Women’s Team Cup round 6, 4th August 2024, Duncan Murray Wines Road Race, Naseby.

The 6th round of the British Women’s Team Cup (BWTC) was held on the Naseby road circuit, a sporting circuit, on 4th August 2024. It was hosted by Welland Valley CC as they have done for many years.

The course starts outside of Naseby Village Hall, through Haselbech and up the wide A508. With a sharp uphill left hand turn at Great Oxenden, the course becomes narrower with bumpier terrain through Clipton. Each of the four laps went uphill to Fairfax’s View on the B4036 before heading back to Naseby, with a 80km total race distance.

The race was attritional, with the bunch being whittled down each lap. Multiple attacks were launched by teams vying for the podium within the main British Women’s Team Cup competition.

Key players in the attempt to split the race up included Lizzie Hermolle (Team Boompods), Harriet Evans (FTP-Fulfil The Potential-Racing), Floren Scrafton (FTP-Fulfil The Potential-Racing), Katie Ann-Calton (Saint Piran WRT), Lydia Watts (The Phoenix Collective), Ruby Oakes (Shibden Apex RT) and Mari Porton (Tofauti Everyone Active).

None of the attacks were able to form a successful break, however, and the race ended with a hotly contested bunch sprint up the final climb.

The eventual winner was Ruby Oakes (Shibden Apex RT), with a gap of two to three bike lengths on second place, Mari Porton (Tofauti Everyone Active). Both highly promising junior racers who we hope to see a lot more of in the years to come!
